Little Red Takes to the Half Pipe

This Friday, the cast of the AYS Theater in the Skatepark program will present Billy Aronson’s comedic interpretation of Little Red Riding Hood.  But this production has a modern edge: it takes place in the skatepark.  The cast will also perform Wiley and the Hairy Man, an adaptation of an old African American folk tale up on the ramps.  Both shows are appropriate for all ages.  Students entering the 8th and 9th grades comprise the cast of both shows.  The actors have been rehearsing nightly since early July, focusing on developing modern performance techniques in the unconventional venue.

If you go:

When: Friday, August 7 at 7:00 PM

Where: The AYS Skatepark behind West Middle School

How: Admission is FREE.  Please bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating.

2009 Season

The AYS staff is very pleased to announce that the Andover  Community Skate Park will open its doors for our 12th summer!  We will be kicking off the season with our annual Hot Dog Skate Jam on Saturday, June 27th, from 12:00pm-7:00pm, followed by a concert ‘til 9:00pm.  It will be an event full of skate contests, product give-a-ways, spontaneous games of S-K-A-T-E, Rock and Roll…….and of course HOT DOGS.  More information will be available about this event soon…check back frequently for updates!

With the help of Converse and the ACSP committee, last year’s PAUL KING MEMORIAL SKATE-A-THON was a huge success, not only monetarily, but with the onward progression of our skate park’s community.  The 24-hour event built connections between different people of all ages, from within and outside of our community.  The $61,000 raised will be used in the construction of a new section of the park, as well as maintenance of existing structures.  The construction is due to start this fall, following another fund-raiser at the end of the season, where we hope to reach our goal of $100,000.

This summer, the skatepark will be featuring concessions, with all of your favorite foods and beverages.  Another added element will be the weekly concert series, featuring local bands playing shows til close!  The park will continue to be a family-like atmosphere, where anyone can come and be free from the constraints of daily life, a little oasis of fun, positive vibes, and constant entertainment, our little home away from home.

We look forward to seeing you all down at the park this year. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at: tlombardi@andoverma.gov or call 978-623-8241.
